In recent years, the use of long-lasting, economical and efficient LED lighting systems are prominent. Importance of LED in Road and Urban Lighting
3% of the electrical energy consumed in our country is used for general lighting purposes. The energy used in road and urban lighting is also included in this percentage. Although this ratio seems to be low, it has an important place in terms of energy efficiency applications in the world. At this point, LED lighting systems, which offer great advantages with the use of interior lighting, are a quality and saving solution in outdoor lighting systems.

Within the scope of road lighting; auto roads, express roads, ring roads, city traffic roads, streets and streets, connection roads, intersections, squares and so on. the lighting of the places with road lighting facilities is understood. Generally, high pressure sodium vapor lamps, high pressure mercury vapor lamps, metal halide lamps (Metal Steam) are used in urban road lighting.















If we look at the negative aspects of these lamps;

Led Luminaire Selection in Road Lighting
When selecting an LED light source luminaire, make sure that the quantities that meet the lighting requirements for the road class are met. For luminaires M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, 70W, 100W, 150W, 250W, 400W LED luminaires should be used respectively. For example, a 40W LED luminaire is used in the streets and 250W LED luminaires are used in urban roads.


Design of Led Luminaires
When designing LED light source luminaires, the lighting conditions of the environment to be used should be determined first. In this respect, minimum lighting criteria should be provided. In order to meet these criteria, the LED luminaire characteristic values ​​are very important.

► Glare limitation
► Light distribution curves
► LED efficiency factor [lm / W]
► LED color temperature
► LED color rendering index

One of the most important points in the design phase is to determine the required number of LEDs. At this stage, optical efficiency and thermal losses must be taken into account to determine the required number of LEDs. Factors such as physical properties of the luminaire and the material used are the factors determining the losses in the luminaire. These losses can be caused by the light being swallowed by the luminaire or reflected back into the luminaire. Another important feature of LED luminaires is that they can operate without the need for additional units thanks to advanced control systems.


Other parameters to be determined in the road lighting design are the height of the light source center of the luminaire, the distance of the light source center of the luminaire from the side of the road to the road, the angle of the luminaire and the distance between the masts.
